Find a Septic Inspector in Wisconsin

“Inspector” means different things depending on why you need one. The path below is different for a routine maintenance check versus an inspection tied to buying or selling a home, and the two are kept separate on this page for a reason: we only get paid on the first one.

Routine Maintenance

This page covers regular POWTS pumping and upkeep, not a real estate transaction.

Request a local provider

Finding someone for routine maintenance

If the reminder card arrived, or it has been close to 3 years since the last documented service, this is a routine maintenance visit. Tell us the ZIP or county and we route the request to a vetted local provider who handles pumping and the county report together.

Real Estate Transaction Information, Not a Paid Referral

We do not accept payment for real estate transaction inspection referrals. For an inspector, use the DSPS credential lookup or call your county.

DSPS POWTS program

Finding an inspector for a home sale or purchase

For a real estate transaction inspection, use the state credential lookup and the county’s own contact rather than a paid referral from this site.

DSPS credential lookupVerified Sep 2026

Wisconsin DSPS maintains the license lookup for POWTS inspectors, master plumbers, and soil testers who are credentialed to perform a septic evaluation. Verify a name there before hiring for a transaction that a lender or attorney will rely on.

Read the code at dsps.wi.gov

A county environmental health office can also point to inspectors familiar with that county’s own reporting system, which can make filing the resulting report faster.

Want a name faster than searching the lookup yourself? Email the contact page and we will point you to a credentialed inspector we know of in the area, at no charge to you and no fee paid to us. That is a plain introduction, not a paid referral, and it is the only thing we offer on this track.

Checking credentials either way

Whoever you hire, confirm two things before the visit: that they hold the correct Wisconsin credential for the work (POWTS inspector, master plumber, or soil tester as applicable), and that they will file the electronic maintenance report with the county when the job is done.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Is this a routine maintenance check or a full real estate inspection?
  • Is pumping included, or billed separately?
  • Will you file the county maintenance report, and when?
  • What does the written report look like, and will a lender accept it?
  • What is not included, camera scope, flow test, risers?
