A mound system is Wisconsin’s answer to shallow soil, high water tables, and heavy clay, common conditions across much of the state. It works differently from a conventional in-ground system, and it maintains differently too.

Why a mound is different

Instead of letting wastewater soak straight down through native soil, a mound builds an engineered sand bed above grade and doses it in controlled bursts. That extra machinery, a pump and a set of small-diameter distribution laterals under pressure, is the tradeoff for making a difficult site usable. The pump chamber

A mound has a septic tank like any system, plus a separate pump chamber that doses the mound on a timer or float switch. That pump chamber has its own service items: floats that can foul, a pump with a working life measured in years rather than decades, and an alarm that should be tested, not ignored if it ever sounds.

A shorter cycle

Because a mound has more moving parts and less soil buffer to hide a small problem, some Wisconsin counties put mound and pressure-dosed systems on a shorter inspection interval than a conventional in-ground system on the same street.

What damages a mound

  • Driving or parking on it, the sand fill compacts and the distribution system underneath can crack.
  • Planting anything with deep roots on or near it, trees and shrubs are the wrong landscaping choice here.
  • Excess water from a sump pump, roof downspout, or footing drain routed onto the mound rather than away from it.
  • Mowing it with heavy equipment that ruts the surface, a push mower is fine, a tractor is not.
