Wisconsin allows several kinds of POWTS, and which one a property has, or is allowed to install, comes down to soil and water table, not homeowner preference. Knowing the type matters because the maintenance interval, discussed in the maintenance rules guide, is not the same for all of them.
Why the type varies by property
A county sanitarian or a licensed soil tester digs test pits and rates the soil before any system is designed. Deep, well-drained soil with a low water table can support the cheapest option, a conventional in-ground system. Shallow soil, bedrock close to the surface, or a high water table forces the system above or around that limitation, usually with a mound or an at-grade design, which is why installation cost varies so much between two lots a mile apart. Conventional (in-ground gravity) system
The simplest and most common type. Wastewater flows by gravity from the tank into a buried drainfield of perforated pipe in gravel trenches, and the soil beneath does the treatment. No pump, no electricity, the lowest installation cost and the standard 3-year evaluation cycle.
At-grade system
Built on top of the natural soil surface rather than in a trench, used where soil is too shallow for a conventional system but not so limited it needs a full mound. Usually includes a small pump to dose the field evenly. Washington County, for example, puts at-grade systems on the same shorter 2-year cycle as mounds, see Washington County septic rules.
Mound system
A raised bed of sand and gravel built above the natural grade, used where the water table is high or soil is thin over bedrock. A pump doses wastewater up into the mound on a timed cycle. Because there is a pump and float switches involved, most counties check mounds more often than conventional systems. See mound system maintenance for what that upkeep actually involves.
Aerobic treatment unit
Adds mechanical aeration to the tank itself, breaking down waste more thoroughly before it reaches the drainfield, which lets a smaller or more limited drainfield handle the same load. Requires more frequent service than a passive tank because it has moving parts, typically checked on a shorter interval set by the county and the manufacturer’s service contract.
Holding tank
No drainfield at all. Everything the house sends down the drain sits in a sealed tank until a hauler pumps it out and takes it to a treatment facility. Used only where soil conditions cannot support any form of in-ground treatment. Because nothing leaves the tank except by truck, holding tanks are tracked far more often than any other type, commonly every year, sometimes more.
Holding tank systems require annual inspection, distinct from the roughly 3-year cycle that applies to tank-and-drainfield systems.

- Can I choose which type of system I install
- Only within what the soil test allows. A licensed soil tester or county sanitarian determines which types are viable for the specific lot before any design work happens.
- Does system type affect pumping cost

- Because a mound sits above grade, wastewater cannot reach it by gravity alone. A pump doses it up on a timed cycle, and that pump is one more thing an inspector checks.
